70% of minors exceed three hours of screen time

A Pau Gasol Foundation study reveals high screen usage among children, with usage rising significantly among older and poorer groups.

New data from the 2023 PASOS study by the Pau Gasol Foundation reveals that 70% of children and adolescents spend over three hours daily on screens. The study of 6,000 minors found an average daily use of 215.5 minutes, rising to 287.1 minutes at weekends.

Executive director Santiago F. Gómez and coordinator Paula Berruezo noted that screen time increases with age, from 120 minutes in primary school to 300 minutes by the fourth year of ESO. Minors from less favoured backgrounds spend 50 minutes more on devices.

Health Minister Mónica García highlights the risks, as 80% of obese adolescents remain so as adults. Furthermore, the ESTUDES study shows 5.2% of minors have addiction disorders, while limiting use to 120 minutes could save 2,559,482 kWh of energy per day.
