# Barcelona tenants launch Bloc Papallona strike

> Four families in the Eixample district are starting a rent strike to demand the council expropriate their building from developers.

Four of the six remaining tenant families at the **Bloc Papallona** in **Barcelona**'s **Eixample** district will begin a rent strike in late October 2026. Supported by the **Sindicato Socialista de Vivienda de Cataluña**, they demand the council expropriate the building.

The property was bought by **New Amsterdam Developers** in 2024, leading to the departure of six tenants. Four current residents face legal action following contract expiries, while others report heritage damage during renovations and alleged regulatory breaches.

This dispute highlights growing tensions over housing rights in Catalonia. Long-term residents, including Corina Cost who has lived there since 2008, are seeking to block further evictions and prevent the investment firm from profiting through room rentals.
