# Barcelona to hike tourist flat property taxes 9 October 2026 at 12:25 > Mayor Jaume Collboni secures approval for a 150% IBI surcharge on tourist apartments to curb city-wide tourism and fund social housing. [Barcelona]()'s municipal government, led by Mayor [Jaume Collboni](), has secured provisional approval to increase the [IBI]() property tax surcharge on tourist apartments by up to 150%. Supported by [ERC]() and [BComú](), the measure aims to discourage city-wide tourism activity. The new sliding scale applies a 50% surcharge for single-unit owners, rising to 100% for those with two or three properties. Owners of four or more dwellings, who hold up to 60% of the city's 10,627 licenses, will face the maximum 150% tax increase under the plan. Expected to generate up to 8 million euros, the revenue may be allocated to public social housing following ERC requests. The measure, opposed by PP and Vox, precedes a total ban on tourist flats by 2028 and now awaits final approval at the city plenary session.
