# COVID-19 cases surge as testing demand triples

> The National Epidemiology Center reports a sharp rise in COVID-19 incidence, prompting a massive increase in diagnostic test supplies.

The **National Epidemiology Center** (CNE) has reported a significant rise in COVID-19 cases. The estimated incidence reached 85 cases per 100,000 inhabitants last week, up from 50.4. Notably, the rate among infants under 12 months rose from 126 to 225 cases.

Wholesale distributor **Bidafarma** expects to supply 60,000 self-diagnostic tests this month, a sharp increase from the usual 15,000 to 20,000. While influenza and RSV levels remain near zero, this surge marks the seventh major peak since the summer of 2022.

The virus, first identified in [Wuhan](<https://spainnews.co.uk/entity/wuhan-q11746>) in 2019, continues to show seasonal volatility. Following peaks in late 2023 and spring 2024, health experts including those from [CSIC](<https://spainnews.co.uk/entity/spanish-national-research-council-q1024362>) and **SEIMC** are monitoring these fluctuations as testing demand triples across the region.
