# ECB expected to raise interest rates to 2.5%

10 September 2026 at 09:07

> The European Central Bank is set to increase rates by 25 basis points in September as global sovereign bond yields reach 2008 levels.

The **European Central Bank**, led by **Christine Lagarde**, is expected to raise interest rates by 25 basis points on 10 September 2026. This move will bring the price of money to 2.5%, coinciding with the Frankfurt-based bank's latest update to economic forecasts.

Sovereign bond yields have risen recently, with developed economies paying debt yields at levels not seen since the 2008 financial crisis. Meanwhile, the US Treasury has increased federal debt buyback programs from 4 billion dollars to 6 billion dollars.

OECD members paid over two trillion dollars in gross interest last year, totalling 3.3% of combined GDP. With the German economy serving as the Eurozone benchmark, markets now anticipate further interest rate hikes in December 2026 and the spring of 2027.
