Maricarmen Abascal, an octogenarian with a disability, was evicted from her Madrid home on Wednesday, 23 September 2026. Having resided in the apartment for 71 years, she was subsequently admitted to hospital suffering from severe exhaustion during the event.
The Sindicato de Inquilinas has distributed a video message from Abascal to President Pedro Sánchez, requesting a decree law be approved on Tuesday, 29 September. Known as the 'decreto Maricarmen', the proposal is supported by a new online public petition.
This case precedes a housing rights demonstration scheduled for Saturday, 26 September at 18:30 in Puerta del Sol. The activist group demands urgent legislative action from the Council of Ministers to prevent similar evictions of vulnerable elderly residents.
