# EU to unveil new Affordable Housing Law draft

The **European Commission** is drafting a new Affordable Housing Law, set to be presented by **Teresa Ribera** and Dan Jorgensen this Wednesday. The proposal empowers local governments to restrict second home purchases and tourist rentals in high-pressure zones.

Local authorities must provide data-driven evidence of housing crises lasting at least three years to justify limits. While existing properties are unaffected, new restrictions on platforms like Airbnb are permitted if they do not target primary residences.

This draft, supported by the Mayors for Housing alliance, seeks to provide legal certainty for market interventions. It now awaits approval from the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union to become law across member states effectively.
