> Esquerra Republicana selects Gabriel Rufián to head its Barcelona candidacy for the upcoming general elections on 29 November.

[Gabriel Rufián](<https://spainnews.co.uk/entity/gabriel-rufian-q20876620>) is set to lead the [Esquerra Republicana](<https://spainnews.co.uk/entity/republican-left-of-catalonia-q150068>) list for [Barcelona](<https://spainnews.co.uk/entity/province-of-barcelona-q81949>) in the upcoming general elections on 29 November. The party executive will formalise the candidacy of the current leader in the Congress of Deputies during a meeting on 11 October 2026.

Internal party meetings are scheduled for 20 October to approve the final candidates for both the Congress and Senate. This follows a joint candidacy announcement between ERC and [EH Bildu](<https://spainnews.co.uk/entity/eh-bildu-q1029761>) for the Senate, repeating a formula previously utilised in July 2023.

Rufián has proposed a plurinational coalition including Sumar, Podemos, EH Bildu, and BNG. However, [Oriol Junqueras](<https://spainnews.co.uk/entity/oriol-junqueras-q116812>) stated ERC will stand in Catalonia while Bildu and BNG contest their own regions, despite the ongoing cooperation between the left-wing parties.
