Labour unions confirm general strike for housing

Unions announce a general strike for 11 November to protest housing issues, marking the first nationwide industrial action in 14 years.

Labour unions have confirmed a general strike for housing will take place on Wednesday, 11 November. The date was finalised on 7 October 2026 after officials considered 4 November as an alternative. This marks the first general strike held in fourteen years.

The action is directed at the business sector and the political right, with unions noting that housing competencies lie with autonomous communities, mostly controlled by the PP. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has defended the strike as a constitutional right.

The strike occurs days before a general election campaign begins. Business leaders have criticised the move, with CEOE president Antonio Garamendi suggesting the action appears illegal, while Foment del Treball described the measure as incomprehensible.
