# Madrid closes Sol Metro station over toxic fumes 16 October 2026 at 12:16 > Regional authorities shut the central transport hub after waste from a protest camp caused dangerous gas levels in ventilation shafts. The **Community of Madrid** has announced the immediate closure of **Sol Metro station** due to unsanitary conditions linked to an illegal housing protest camp. Regional President **Isabel Díaz Ayuso** confirmed the decision on Friday following a technical report. The report, issued on Thursday afternoon, detected toxic gases in ventilation shafts and station accesses. These fumes originated from the accumulation of urine and organic waste at the **Puerta del Sol** camp, which enters its third week this Saturday. Urgent cleaning and security measures are now underway, though the duration of the closure remains unknown. The move follows requests from unions and occupational risk experts after overcrowding led to temporary police interventions earlier this week. **Madrid** #MadridMetro [#PuertaDelSol]() [#PublicHealth]() [#IsabelDíazAyuso]() [#MadridNews]() ## Related news ## [Madrid teachers continue strike for second day]() 15 October 2026 at 16:09 ## [Valencia Police start issuing cleaning fines]() 14 October 2026 at 16:36 ## [Indefinite education strike begins in Madrid]() 14 October 2026 at 12:32 ## [Madrid doctors call 12 days of regional strikes]() 14 October 2026 at 11:00 ## [Salmonella outbreak in Spain linked to eggs]() 13 October 2026 at 10:07
