Madrid judge probes Air Europa rescue case

Judge José María Escribano summons high-profile witnesses to testify in November regarding the legality of the Air Europa state bailout.

A Madrid judge is investigating the rescue of Air Europa, with testimonial statements scheduled for the week of 29 November. Judge José María Escribano, head of the Juzgado de Instrucción 49, has summoned several high-profile witnesses to provide evidence.

Those called include Third Vice President Sara Aagesen, Manuel de la Rocha, and former Sumar spokesperson Íñigo Errejón. Current and former SEPI officials are also involved in the case, which was opened in May following complaints from PP, Vox and Manos Limpias.

The PP alleges Air Europa failed to meet rescue requirements due to a 5.8 million euro tax debt in 2019. SEPI Vice President Bartolomé Lora, summoned as a defendant in June, denied any irregularities but admitted that meetings occurred prior to the rescue.
