# Madrid teachers block A-3 highway in pay strike

19 October 2026 at 09:41

> Public education staff in Madrid have obstructed the A-3 highway as part of an indefinite strike demanding reduced hours and higher pay.

Non-university public education teachers in **Madrid** have escalated their industrial action today, Monday, 19 October 2026, by blocking the A-3 highway. Protesters obstructed traffic heading into the capital as part of an indefinite strike starting 14 October.

Promoted by **CC.OO.**, **CGT**, **UGT**, and platforms like **Menos Lectivas**, the strike demands a reduction to 17 weekly teaching periods in secondary schools and 22 in primary. Unions also seek lower class ratios, more guidance staff, and a 600-euro monthly pay increase.

The movement, supported by CSIF and university platforms, aims to end the current bilingualism model and recover link classrooms. This significant disruption highlights urgent calls for pay equalisation and enhanced hazard pay within special education sectors.
