Maricarmen Abascal dies aged 87 after eviction

Maricarmen Abascal has died in a Madrid hospital two weeks after being evicted from the Retiro flat where she lived for seven decades.

Maricarmen Abascal has died aged 87 at Madrid's Hospital Gregorio Marañón on Wednesday, 7 October 2026. The Sindicato de Inquilinas confirmed her death, which occurred two weeks after she was evicted from her home in the Retiro district on 23 September 2026.

Abascal lived in the Ibiza neighbourhood flat for 70 years after her father rented it in 1956. Following a 2020 purchase by a company, she faced four eviction attempts as owners sought 1,600 euros rent, despite her 1,400 euro pension and existing subrogation.

The former pharmaceutical secretary remained hospitalised from her eviction until her death. Although a recent agreement would have allowed her to return under a new contract, she will now be laid to rest in the Cantabrian Sea as per her final request.
