> Thousands marched in Barcelona on Monday to protest the housing crisis, leading to clashes with police and a camp in Plaza de Cataluña.

A major housing crisis demonstration took place in [Barcelona](<https://spainnews.co.uk/entity/barcelona-q1492>) on Monday, 5 October 2026. Starting at 20:00 in [Plaza Urquinaona](<https://spainnews.co.uk/entity/placa-d-urquinaona-q2349130>), the march saw 20,000 attendees according to the [Guardia Urbana](<https://spainnews.co.uk/entity/guardia-urbana-de-barcelona-q3751597>), though organisers estimated the turnout reached 120,000 people.

The protest followed the failure of housing decrees in the [Congress of Deputies](<https://spainnews.co.uk/entity/congress-of-deputies-q539149>) and the announcement of a general election for 29 November. Originally scheduled for Saturday, the event was postponed to Monday due to a red weather alert for heavy rainfall.

Violence erupted after 21:30 as individuals in balaclavas threw stones and rockets at police. [Mossos d’Esquadra](<https://spainnews.co.uk/entity/mossos-d-esquadra-q1424346>) officers charged groups near Plaza de Cataluña, where containers were burned and arrests made. Tents remain in the square for a protest camp.
