# Met Office names Storm Austen as it nears UK

22 October 2026 at 15:50

> Storm Austen is set to bring 100km/h winds and heavy rain to southern Britain and parts of Europe as it undergoes explosive deepening.

The **Met Office** has named **Storm Austen**, which is forecast to undergo explosive deepening between Thursday, 22 October 2026, and Friday. Driven by the polar jet stream, the storm's centre will track towards southern **Great Britain** and the English Channel.

The system will impact western France, the Benelux region, and Germany. In Spain, **Aemet** has issued yellow warnings for the northern coast, where waves may reach five metres. Wind gusts exceeding 100 km/h and 10-metre waves are predicted for parts of **Galicia**.

Heavy rain will hit northwest Galicia, with snow expected in the Pyrenees above 1,800 metres. While northern regions face significant precipitation, an anticyclonic ridge will prevent rainfall across much of central and southern Spain during the period.
