Police clear Ceuta shanty settlement at Benítez

National Police have evicted migrants from a beach settlement in Ceuta to prevent safety risks following the start of the rainy season.

National Police launched an operation at 07:00 to clear a shanty settlement at Benítez beach, Ceuta. Over ten vans deployed as fifty riot officers woke migrants before 08:00. While thirty individuals fled toward the centre, most left their shacks peacefully.

Migrants are being moved to the Temporary Care Center for Foreigners at Tarajal for formal identification. Drones with thermal cameras confirmed people were living inside water conduits. Officers also secured Trampolín beach to manage over 4,000 migrants there.

The eviction follows the start of the rainy season on 28 September. Authorities cite safety risks regarding a dam spillway that evacuates water during heavy rain. A perimeter will now be established near the desalination plant to prevent future re-occupation.
