Prosecutor backs CERA census suspension

The Spanish Public Prosecutor's Office supports suspending census reviews for the November elections to protect voting rights for 163,020.

The Spanish Public Prosecutor's Office has submitted formal allegations to the Supreme Court regarding the census of Spanish residents living abroad (CERA) ahead of elections on 29 November. It supports suspending census review actions for this process.

The census closed on 1 August, but the Government wants all who gained nationality under the 2022 Law of Democratic Memory to vote. The State Attorney's Office says it is impossible to review 168,896 registrations before the deadline, citing a 2027 target.

Legal appellants including Vox are involved in the proceedings. The State Attorney warns that 163,020 Spaniards face losing their fundamental right to active suffrage without a hearing, as the Supreme Court's 48-hour deadline for party allegations expires.
