The Prosecutor's Office has requested the acquittal of Begoña Gómez, wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and her advisor Cristina Álvarez. The case, overseen by Judge Juan Carlos Peinado, concerns a non-remunerated chair at Complutense University.
Gómez received zero euros for co-directing the chair until 2024. Software developed for the project was privately funded and registered to the university. Prosecutors state Álvarez's role as an assistant has existed in all Spanish governments since 1978.
While Judge Peinado claims Álvarez's hiring was fraudulent due to university-related emails, regulations do not require degrees for directing such chairs. These positions aim to attract private funds and do not offer remuneration to those in leadership roles.
