# Severe flooding hits Catalonia after heavy rain

Torrential rain hit [Catalonia](<https://spainnews.co.uk/entity/catalonia-q5705>) from 20:00 on Saturday, 3 October 2026, causing widespread disruption. [Barcelona](<https://spainnews.co.uk/entity/barcelona-q1492>) saw rainfall exceed 100 litres per square metre, with the Zona Universitaria station recording 102.8 litres in two hours and El Prat seeing 77.9.

The [Generalitat](<https://spainnews.co.uk/entity/generalitat-de-catalunya-q8022>) restricted mobility across 20 counties as flooding struck infrastructure. Water leaked from ceilings at [Sants station](<https://spainnews.co.uk/entity/barcelona-sants-railway-station-q800453>) and into hospitals, while the C-32 highway closed at kilometre 61.5. In L'Hospitalet, floodwaters moved heavy containers.

River levels surged dangerously, with the [Llobregat](<https://spainnews.co.uk/entity/llobregat-q31424>) basin at Sant Joan Despi reaching 165 cubic metres per second, fifteen times its morning flow. At Sant Quinti de Mediona, volumes hit 230 cubic metres per second, posing a severe risk to the entire region.
