# Spain approves €225m for affordable housing 20 October 2026 at 13:42 > The Spanish government has allocated €225 million to support social rentals in stressed markets and create 2,000 university housing units. The **Spanish Council of Ministers** has approved a €225 million package for affordable housing measures on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. The funding, split into two royal decree-laws, requires final approval by the Permanent Deputation of the **Congress of Deputies**. A €180 million fund will support 317 municipalities in five autonomous communities with stressed residential markets. **Catalonia** receives €119.4 million, while the Basque Country, Navarre, Galicia, and Asturias share the remainder to boost social rental supply. A further €45 million is allocated to create 2,000 university housing units for students and staff. Seven institutions, including the **Autonomous University of Madrid** and the **University of Castilla-La Mancha**, will receive subsidies for short-term projects.
