Spain buys Javier Marías archive for €500,000

The Spanish Ministry of Culture has acquired the late author's personal archive and library for the Biblioteca Nacional de España.

The Spanish Ministry of Culture has acquired the personal archive of the late writer and academic Javier Marías for 500,000 euros. The collection, which includes typed originals of all his novels, will be permanently housed at the Biblioteca Nacional de España.

The archive features drafts with handwritten notes, galley proofs, and extensive correspondence. His widow, Carme López Rodríguez-Mercader, also donated his personal library, including photographs, letters, and records, to the national institution in Madrid.

Marías, a member of the Real Academia Española who died in 2022, was a major literary figure known for works such as Todas las almas. This acquisition ensures the preservation of his professional legacy, spanning from his 1971 debut to his final trilogies.
