Spain rejects suspension of 'grandchildren's law'

The Spanish Government and JEC have opposed a legal bid to halt voter registrations for descendants of exiles ahead of 2027 elections.

The Spanish Government and the (JEC) rejected the suspension of the 'grandchildren's law' during a Supreme Court hearing on 7 September 2026. Vox and Iustitia Europa sought to halt new voter registrations in the CERA electoral census.

The 2022 Law of Democratic Memory grants nationality to descendants of exiles. Critics claim 29,000 foreign registrants were added in two months, totalling 408,000 since 2023. The State Attorney argued that suspending these rights would violate suffrage laws.

The JEC stated it cannot evaluate nationality procedures, noting suffrage is only suspendable during a State of Siege. With local elections set for May 2027, the court must decide if the census growth causes irreversible effects on the upcoming democratic vote.
