The Ministry of Health has requested the State Attorney's Office to compel the Community of Madrid to implement a registry of conscientious objectors to abortion. Minister Mónica García announced the move on Tuesday, citing a lack of progress since September.
Spanish law requires regions to maintain confidential registries of healthcare staff who opt out of the procedure. While Madrid published a draft order in April following a court ruling, the Ministry claims the administration has failed to advance further.
The dispute highlights regional disparities, with 99% of Madrid's 2024 abortions performed in private centres. The Ministry's new campaign aims to ensure access in public hospitals, despite President Isabel Díaz Ayuso labelling the registry a black list.
