Health Minister Mónica García has announced that pharmacological abortion will be integrated into the Primary Care service portfolio. The Ministry will now modify the mifepristone technical data sheet and update the Royal Decree governing health centre authorisations to adapt requirements for primary care facilities.
Currently, mifepristone is restricted to hospital use by specialists for pregnancies up to nine weeks. Recent data shows regional disparities, with surgical methods used in 94% of Madrid cases, while 49.14% of all patients used no contraception. In 2024, eight out of ten procedures were performed in private centres.
The move aims to decentralise access following 106,172 reported interruptions two years ago, a rate of 12.36 per 1,000 women. With three-quarters of procedures occurring before eight weeks, shifting care to local clinics addresses the low public sector provision seen in regions like Andalusia and Extremadura.
