> The Spanish government faces a crisis after housing measures were defeated, sparking internal debate over a potential snap election.

The [Spanish Congress](<https://spainnews.co.uk/entity/congress-of-deputies-q539149>) rejected two housing decrees on Friday, 2 October 2026, following a session closed by President [Pedro Sánchez](<https://spainnews.co.uk/entity/pedro-sanchez-q6070218>). The measures failed after [Junts](<https://spainnews.co.uk/entity/together-for-catalonia-2020-q97155800>), PP, and Vox voted against the proposals, while housing protests took place outside the gates.

The [PSOE](<https://spainnews.co.uk/entity/spanish-socialist-workers-party-q138198>) Executive Committee will meet on Monday, 5 October, amid internal divisions over whether to call an early election or continue the term. President Sánchez has no public agenda this weekend, while the King and Queen prepare for a state visit to Finland.

If Parliament is dissolved on Monday, a mandatory 54-day period means a general election would occur on 29 November 2026. The coalition government, formed by PSOE and [Sumar](<https://spainnews.co.uk/entity/sumar-electoral-platform-q112098527>), now faces a critical decision regarding the future of the current legislative term.
