# Spanish court upholds voting ban for 163,000

> The Supreme Court has rejected appeals to restore voting rights for new citizens ahead of Spain's upcoming elections on 29 November.

The **Spanish Supreme Court** has upheld a suspension of voting rights for 163,020 individuals who gained nationality via the **Law of Democratic Memory**. The Administrative Litigation Chamber rejected appeals to lift the ban for the 29 November 2026 elections.

The suspension follows requests from **Vox** and **Iustitia Europa**. Officials state it is impossible to distinguish between those nationalised by law and those under ministry instructions before 2027, despite the electoral census having closed on 1 August 2026.

The court ruled that irregular census entries risk altering electoral results. Under **LOREG** rules, the final census must be published by 23 October 2026, following a public consultation period that began on 12 October to resolve any outstanding legal claims.
