# Spanish firms demand labour reform for absenteeism

5 November 2026 at 16:10

> A Spanish Chamber of Commerce study reveals 80% of business owners seek legal changes as temporary disability rates rise across Spain.

The **Spanish Chamber of Commerce** published its Study on Business Climate on 5 November 2026, revealing that 80% of business owners demand labour law reforms to curb absenteeism. Despite this, 85% of firms admit they lack internal protocols to mitigate it.

**Social Security** data shows temporary disability rose to 55.18 processes per 1,000 staff by June 2026. While 74% of large firms see this as a serious issue, only 30% of **SMEs** agree. Over half of firms want **mutual insurers** to manage sick leave more directly.

The issue ranks as a top concern for just 18% of firms, trailing the 42% worried by rising input costs. Consequently, 70% of companies plan to raise prices in 2027, while few executives suggest flexible working or reconciliation as potential solutions.
