# Spanish Ombudsman appeals voting rights ruling

The Spanish Ombudsman, **Ángel Gabilondo**, has filed an urgent appeal for protection with the Constitutional Court. This legal action seeks immediate precautionary measures following a Supreme Court ruling that limits voting rights for naturalised citizens.

The Supreme Court recently upheld a suspension of census effects for descendants of exiles under the **Democratic Memory Law** for the 29 November elections. It ruled that general interests prevail over individual rights for those registered after 1 August 2026.

Gabilondo argues this interpretation may violate fundamental voting rights. The dispute began after appeals from **Vox** and Iusticia Europa, leading the Ombudsman to act on behalf of individuals and entities seeking to protect their democratic participation.
