Spanish teachers work an average of 38 hours per week, two hours less than the OECD average of 40.8. While Primary teachers in Spain teach 828 hours annually compared to the 770 OECD average, Secondary teachers teach 642 hours, below the 710-hour average.
Despite shorter hours, 24.6% of Spanish teachers hold contracts of one year or less. However, 54% are satisfied with their salary, significantly higher than the 38% OECD average. Primary teachers in Spain start earning 24% more than their international peers.
Public education spending in Spain sits at 3.9% of GDP, below the 4.2% OECD average. While youth unemployment for graduates fell to 8% in 2025, only 15% of Spanish teachers feel their profession is valued by society, compared to 21.7% across the OECD.
