Spanish unions weigh general strike over housing

UGT and CC OO leaders meet to discuss major mobilisations following the rejection of housing decrees and rising cost of living pressures.

Pepe Álvarez of UGT and Unai Sordo of CC OO are considering major mobilisations, including a potential general strike, following the rejection of two housing decrees by the Congress of Deputies. The unions will meet on 5 October to discuss joint actions.

The move follows President Pedro Sánchez calling a general election for 29 November. Sordo highlighted that petrol prices have hit annual highs and argued for significant wage increases, citing high corporate profits as justification for these new demands.

CC OO plans to coordinate days of struggle with other organisations to advocate for housing rights. Álvarez confirmed that all decisions regarding industrial action will be taken jointly, as the unions seek to address the current cost of living pressures.
