AVE and Iryo trains collide in Urda, Toledo

Investigators examine a potential protocol failure after a Renfe AVE and an Iryo train collided in Urda following a signalling issue.

A AVE train and an convoy have been involved in a railway accident in . Preliminary investigations suggest the driver of the following train failed to receive a 'marcha a la vista' order from the command post before the collision occurred.

The 'marcha a la vista' protocol is an exceptional prescription within the Railway Traffic Regulation. It requires drivers to maintain speeds between 30 and 40 km/h, ensuring they can stop for any visible obstacle or signal by overriding automatic safeguards.

Investigators are now scrutinising voice recordings between the control centre and the AVE cabin. This incident follows a 2026 signalling failure in Adamuz, highlighting risks when ERTMS or ASFA protections are functionally cancelled for manual track use.
