Barcelona court clears path for man's euthanasia

Legal proceedings halting the euthanasia of Francesc Augé have been archived after his father withdrew his challenge in a Barcelona court.

A court has archived the case that halted the euthanasia of 56-year-old Francesc Augé after his father, Jordi Augé, 96, withdrew from legal proceedings. The Vallirana resident, who has suffered four strokes and two heart attacks, may now proceed.

The and the Comissió de Garantia i Avaluació de Catalunya approved the request in August 2024. However, the process was delayed by a legal challenge supported by Abogados Cristianos, leading to a suicide attempt by Francesc in mid-September.

The TSJC and Supreme Court confirmed a relative's standing to oppose such cases, which Dret a Morir Dignament defended as a right to autonomy. To date, 361 euthanasias have been performed in Catalonia, highlighting the ongoing debate over end-of-life care.
