Judge Juan Carlos Peinado has ordered an oral trial against Begoña Gómez, wife of the President of the Government, to begin on 21 September 2026. Gómez faces charges of influence peddling and embezzlement, with the proceedings to be held before a jury.
The charges involve the creation of a chair at the Complutense University of Madrid and the private use of its software. Advisor Cristina Álvarez also faces embezzlement charges. The university, as an injured party, is currently claiming 113,000 euros.
The popular prosecution seeks a 13-year sentence, while the judge investigates Gómez's finances via tax returns. Although no bail is set, the order is final. Peinado is due to retire just days after the trial starts, on 27 September 2026 at the age of 72.
