Constitutional Court grants amnesty to Dolors Bassa

Spain's Constitutional Court rules that the Supreme Court violated Dolors Bassa's rights by refusing to apply the amnesty law for embezzlement.

The Plenary of the Constitutional Court has granted protection to former Catalan counselor Dolors Bassa, ruling seven to five that her fundamental rights were violated. President Cándido Conde-Pumpido acted as rapporteur for this landmark constitutional decision.

This ruling marks the first protection granted against the Supreme Court's refusal to amnesty embezzlement related to the October 1st independence bid. The court found the Supreme Court's interpretation contrary to the Amnesty Law, violating Article 24.1.

The binding criteria now apply to the Criminal Chamber and Judge Pablo Llarena, impacting leaders like Carles Puigdemont. Five magistrates, including Ricardo Enríquez and Concepción Espejel, will issue dissenting opinions following the controversial verdict.
