Five people were arrested in Valencia on Saturday following a housing rights demonstration that ended in violent clashes. The detainees, accused of throwing fences, cobblestones and pyrotechnics at police, are scheduled to appear in court this Monday morning.
Nine officers were injured as protesters broke a cordon at the Palau de Les Arts, where a real estate congress was held. Police Intervention Units responded with charges, rubber bullets and smoke canisters after being targeted by various thrown projectiles.
Political groups Compromís and Podemos have demanded explanations from the Government Delegation over the police response. Conversely, the Jupol union criticised Delegate Pilar Bernabé, claiming the deployment was inadequate for the scale of the protest.
