Fuel tax cut of 20 cents per litre begins today

The government has launched a fuel discount scheme to combat rising prices, offering motorists immediate savings at the petrol pump.

A fuel tax reduction of 20 cents per litre for unleaded gasoline and diesel has commenced today, 1 October 2026. Published in the Official State Gazette under Royal Decree-law 25/2026, the measure addresses economic impacts from the Middle East crisis.

Motorists will save eight euros on a 40-litre refill and 12 euros for 60 litres. The government schedule plans to reduce the discount to 13 cents in November and six cents in December, though these rates may be extended if fuel price inflation exceeds 15%.

First Vice President Carlos Cuerpo confirmed the package follows August price hikes of 30% for diesel. The measures, including specific aid for the agricultural and professional transport sectors, will remain effective until the end of December 2026.
