Magnitude 3.4 earthquake strikes near Granada

A magnitude 3.4 earthquake hit Churriana de la Vega on Wednesday, marking over 1,000 tremors recorded in the region during September.

A magnitude 3.4 earthquake was recorded near Granada on Wednesday, 16 September 2026, at 09:54:07. Data from the Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) located the epicenter 1km from Churriana de la Vega, with tremors felt in Armilla, Cúllar Vega and Vegas del Genil.

The IGN has provided a macrosismic questionnaire for residents in affected areas, including Motril and Almuñécar. This event follows a period of high activity, with 116 earthquakes recorded in the past week and 1,045 tremors noted throughout September 2026 so far.

Seismic activity in the region remains significant following a magnitude 4.8 quake on 14 August. While the largest ever recorded reached 9.5 in Chile, these local movements are measured on the Richter scale, which quantifies energy released by ground movement.
