The Government is set to restore mandatory readings for the Baccalaureate from the 2027-2028 academic year. Consellera Esther Niubó presented the measure within a new learning improvement guide from the Departament d'Educació, covering reading and mathematics.
The guide includes practices for orality, debates, and handwriting. Mandatory texts will be drawn from the Catalan and Spanish literary canons, reversing changes made under the Lomloe curriculum which previously removed common prescriptive lists for students.
Language teachers had protested the removal of these readings and reduced subject hours. While the 2025 university entrance exams were the first to exclude common book questions, this new guidance aims to formalise literary requirements across the curriculum.
