OCU Study: Spanish Grocery Costs Rise to €6,602

Annual supermarket analysis reveals fresh food prices rose 4.7% while savvy shoppers can save up to 1,310 euros by switching retailers.

The OCU released its annual supermarket price study on Friday, 25 September 2026, following an analysis of 100,000 prices across 65 chains and 690 stores. Data collected in April and May shows the average Spanish shopping basket now costs 6,602 euros annually.

While the average price increase was 1.8% this year, fresh food rose by 4.7%, with fish up 8.6%. Dani remains the cheapest chain, followed by Family Cash and Alcampo. Conversely, Sánchez Romero, Supercor, and El Corte Inglés are the most expensive retailers.

Households can save an average of 1,310 euros annually by choosing cheaper outlets, with savings reaching 4,382 euros in Madrid. Although prices rose 39.5% over five years, eight major chains including Lidl, Mercadona, and Aldi have recently lowered prices.
