Puigdemont arrest warrants suspended by Llarena

Supreme Court magistrate Pablo Llarena halts national arrest warrants for Carles Puigdemont and former ministers following a court appeal.

Supreme Court magistrate Pablo Llarena issued a court order on 6 October 2026, immediately suspending national arrest warrants for former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont. The suspension also applies to former regional ministers Antoni Comin and Lluis Puig.

The decision follows the Constitutional Court's approval of an appeal by former minister Dolors Bassa regarding the denial of amnesty for embezzlement. Citing the right to liberty under Article 17, Llarena has instructed all police forces to halt arrests.

This provisional suspension does not declare the amnesty law applicable or extinguish criminal responsibility. It marks a shift from the July 2024 order, with the final status pending a full review of the Constitutional Court's recent legal ruling text.
