The Spanish Government will limit the increase of the Tarifa de Último Recurso (TUR) gas tariff to 15% from 1 October. Without this intervention by the Ministry for Ecological Transition, bills for over 3.1 million households would have risen by over 45%.
A new decree, to be approved by the Council of Ministers on 29 September 2026, also caps butane cylinders at 19.55 euros until June 2027. This affects seven million users, with the current price at 18.84 euros, amidst rising costs due to Middle East conflict.
European gas prices now exceed 70 euros per MWh, up from 30 euros before the crisis. While the government acts to protect consumers, EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen has advised member states against measures that could stimulate hydrocarbon demand.
