Spain extends border controls for Italy arrivals

The Spanish Ministry of the Interior has extended border checks at ports and airports for travellers from Italy until September 2026.

The Spanish has extended border controls at ports and airports for travellers arriving from until 22 September 2026. Published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado on Saturday, the order continues the suspension of Schengen rules.

This follows Italy's decision to extend its own suspension of the free movement agreement with Spain for two weeks, citing national security concerns linked to the migration crisis in Ceuta. Madrid had previously requested that Rome lift these restrictions.

Spanish officials stated that threats to public order and internal security persist, necessitating the extension from 8 September. The measures remain under permanent evaluation and will be terminated if security risks subside or less restrictive options arise.
