Spain proposes new progressive retirement scale

Social Security official Alfonso Muñoz suggests allowing earlier retirement based on additional contributions without financial penalties.

Social Security official Alfonso Muñoz has proposed a new progressive scale for Spanish retirement. Under this plan, every six months of additional contributions would allow for a three-month advancement of the retirement age without incurring any penalty.

Current rules see the retirement age rising to 67 by 2027, though those with 38.5 years of contributions can retire at 65. Muñoz also suggests a permanent contributory equity supplement to compensate retirees previously affected by reduction coefficients.

This follows Law 21/2021, which introduced a 2022 supplement for involuntary early retirees with over 44.5 years of contributions. The Congress of Deputies has also urged the Government to remove reduction coefficients for those with 40 years of service.
