Spain to face 43C heatwave in early September

Aemet forecasts temperatures up to 10C above seasonal norms across Spain, with peaks of 43C expected in southern provinces by Thursday.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has forecast a significant heatwave across Spain for early September 2026. While Monday 31 August sees a temporary six-degree drop in the Cantabrian region and Pyrenees, temperatures will rise steadily elsewhere.

By Thursday 3 September, maximums in Badajoz, Córdoba, and Sevilla are expected to hit 43C. Other regions including Madrid, Zaragoza, and Toledo will see peaks between 38C and 40C, with Mediterranean coastal minimums remaining stubbornly above 20C at night.

This episode involves air masses over the Iberian Peninsula reaching levels 10C higher than seasonal norms. The intense heat is predicted to persist through the weekend of 5 and 6 September, with yellow warnings already active in several southern provinces.
