Spanish Congress rejects key housing decrees

The Spanish government faces a crisis after housing measures were defeated, sparking internal debate over a potential snap election.

The Spanish Congress rejected two housing decrees on Friday, 2 October 2026, following a session closed by President Pedro Sánchez. The measures failed after Junts, PP, and Vox voted against the proposals, while housing protests took place outside the gates.

The PSOE Executive Committee will meet on Monday, 5 October, amid internal divisions over whether to call an early election or continue the term. President Sánchez has no public agenda this weekend, while the King and Queen prepare for a state visit to Finland.

If Parliament is dissolved on Monday, a mandatory 54-day period means a general election would occur on 29 November 2026. The coalition government, formed by PSOE and Sumar, now faces a critical decision regarding the future of the current legislative term.
