Spanish Congress rejects two key housing decrees

Over 1.8 million rental contracts are affected after Junts joins opposition parties to vote down government eviction and rent protections.

The Spanish Congress rejected two housing decrees on Friday, 2 October 2026, after seven Junts deputies joined the People's Party, Vox, and UPN in voting against the measures. The government had approved the initiatives only days earlier on 29 September.

The failed legislation included protections against evictions for vulnerable citizens and an extraordinary two-year extension for rental contracts. Minister Isabel Rodríguez noted that 90% of Junts' proposals were included, yet the party still voted no.

The Ministry of Consumption estimates the rejection will impact 1,895,676 rental contracts. While Junts warned of reduced supply and higher prices, groups including Izquierda Unida and Sumar will meet on 4 October to analyse potential electoral scenarios.
