Spanish PISA scores drop in science and reading

Spanish students fall below EU averages in core subjects despite increased AI use and fewer classroom distractions, PISA 2025 data shows.

The 2025 report reveals a significant decline in the performance of Spanish secondary students across science, reading, and mathematics. Science scores fell to 477 points, while reading plummeted by 23 points and maths dropped 16 points since 2022.

Spanish students now trail both OECD and EU averages in science. Notably, Catalonia was excluded from the 2025 report due to non-representative sampling. While Madrid led with 495 points in science, regions like Ceuta and Melilla recorded the lowest results.

Despite falling grades, classroom distractions from mobile devices have decreased. Spanish pupils use AI for schoolwork more frequently than EU peers, with 23.9% using it daily for learning and 13.8% for writing, as 30,000 students were assessed nationwide.
