Sumar has registered an amendment to the Organic Law of Education project to establish a legal presumption of exile for Spaniards who left between 1936 and 1955. The move, led by Izquierda Unida spokesperson Enrique Santiago, was submitted on 16 September.
The proposal follows a Supreme Court precautionary suspension affecting 400,000 people who gained nationality under the 2022 Democratic Memory Law. This suspension, prompted by Iustitia Europa and Vox, halted census registration for these new Spanish citizens.
The amendment aims to counter legal challenges to the 'law of grandchildren' criteria signed by Sofía Puente. The Bureau of the Commission for Education must now qualify the text as the project continues its processing phase within the Congress of Deputies.
