Catalonia issues maximum red alert for heavy rain

Meteocat raises danger levels to six out of six as intense storms threaten the Catalan coast with up to 200mm of rainfall this weekend.

The Meteorological Service of Catalonia, Meteocat, has raised its rain warning to the maximum danger level of six out of six. Intense rainfall is forecast for the entire Catalan coast and pre-coastal areas during Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

Precipitation may exceed 40mm in 30 minutes, with some locations seeing over 90mm in three hours or 200mm within 24 hours. Level five warnings are also active for specific accumulations as the storm moves from the central coast towards inland Girona regions.

Civil Protection has downgraded the Inuncat plan to alert status but urges caution during travel and outdoor activities. The weather is expected to stabilise by Sunday midday, following heavy rain across Tarragona, Barcelona and Girona this weekend.
