The Italian government has announced a second 15-day extension of travel controls at ports and airports for arrivals from Spain. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi confirmed the decision on Tuesday following a meeting with security and immigration officials.
The measures, first introduced on 1 August after a crisis in Ceuta, involve random checks to mitigate risks of terrorist infiltration. While Madrid has requested the removal of these restrictions, Rome maintains that internal security threats remain high.
Since August, Italy has screened over 180,000 travellers from Spain, resulting in 31 entry refusals and six arrests. The Meloni government has formally notified the European Commission of the extension, citing national security as the primary justification.
